San Nicolò dei Mendicoli

The church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli is one of the oldest and most popular churches in Venice. Perhaps founded in the 7th Century, it was later rebuilt and altered several times over the centuries. Next to the church is the imposing square Romanesque bell-tower built at the end of the 12th Century. The church has a basilica plan whose a central nave is decorated by some fine gilded wooden statues from the 16th Century. There is a cycle of paintings depicting the life of Christ around the upper walls, the work of Alvise dal Friso and other pupils of Veronese.

Thanks to the “Venice in Peril” Fund, the church was restored in the 1970s. This was perhaps one of the most radical interventions following the flood of 1966: the floor had dropped to 30 cm below the level of the canals and had to be raised to avoid further damage, while the roof and bottom walls were rebuilt and the paintings and statues restored.
