Santa Fosca

To the right of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of Santa Fosca completed the huge architectural complex of the historical cathedral of Torcello, together with the Oratorio di San Marco and the Baptistry.

Santa Fosca has a central plan and was built in the 11th and 12th Centuries, probably on the ruins of a former church from the 7th Century. The church exterior has a graceful five-sided portico with arches sitting on Greek marble columns and beautifully carved capitals. The external walls are elegant and articulated, adorned with fretwork.

The suggestive interior, with its Greek cross layout and enlarged choir and apse, is reminiscent of the typical Byzantine style in form and decoration.
The church contains the tomb of the martyr Santa Fosca, to whom the church is dedicated.
