Museo Correr

This famous museum of art and history in Venice in the Procuratie Nuove is dedicated to Teodoro Correr, a rich abbot who donated his vast collection of art and documents to the city in 1830.
The first rooms house some works by the young Antonio Canova, sculptures that already bear his Neoclassic mark.

The interesting Quadreria (picture gallery) displays the paintings in chronological sequence, thus letting you trace the evolution of Venetian painting and see how foresti artists (especially those from Ferrara, Padua and Flanders) influenced it to varying degrees. There also works by some of the old masters from the 14th and 15th Centuries, such as Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini and Vittore Carpaccio, the latter becoming famous for his love of portraying everyday life in Venice and his time.

Part of the Correr Museum is dedicated to the Risorgimento. The "Museo del Risorgimento" is a museum within a museum and contains documents, relics, paintings and prints that describe the important role played by the city of Venice in uniting Italy.
