Michele Sanmicheli, or Sammicheli (Verona 1485-1559), was an architect and exponent of sixteenth-century Classicism.

Having studied with his father Giovanni and uncle Bartolomeo, he was sent to Rome to complete his training as an architect by working with Donato Bramante, the great architect and forerunner of the Renaissance style.
He then worked with the Florentine Sangallo architectural firm, responsible for so many fine works in Rome and Florence.

Sanmicheli specialised in military engineering and architecture, in the Veneto region and in Dalmatia. He was also an important civil architect in the Veneto area. In Venice he contributed to the marvellous Palazzo Grimani (1556-57) on the Canal Grande in the sestiere of San Marco.
