The Medieval church of San Cassiano sits in campo San Cassiano in the centre of Rialto. Founded in the 10th Century, it has been added to many times over the years and is now a combination of several architectural styles.
The bell-tower dates from the fourteenth-century bell tower, originally built as a lookout tower. A large portico along the front of this church was knocked down in the 19th Century for reasons of public safety: like many other Venetian porticoes, it was the favoured haunt of thieves, muggers and prostitutes.
Indeed, Campo San Cassiano, like all Rialto, was infamous for prostitution as far back as the 1500s.
