Sant’Alvise

The church of Sant’Alvise in Campo Sant’Alvise sits on the edge of the sestiere of Cannaregio, one of the most secret and distant places in Venice. This church was originally a convent. It is said that it was commissioned by the Venetian noblewoman Antonia Venier, to be dedicated to San Ludovico da Tolosa who had appeared to her in a dream. However, this church was certainly built between the end of the 14th Century and the beginning of the 15th Century with the money of a noblewoman.

In the Gothic style, it has a basilica layout and a single [nave] with brick walls and façade. In the 17th Century it underwent major restructuring. Behind the church is a fine brick bell-tower from the 1300s that has retained its original Gothic structure. There are three splendid paintings inside Sant’Alvise by a young Giambattista Tiepolo portraying episodes from Christ’s passion.
