Linked to Burano by a wooden bridge, the island of Mazzorbo is inhabited by just a few hundred souls. It has traditional ties with the island of isola di Torcello.

Its ancient name was “Maiurbium”, from the Latin meaning “greater city”, thanks to its closeness to Torcello, the first capital of the lagoon area. There are no fewer than five parishes and six monasteries on Mazzorbo, the first monastery dating back to the 8th Century. None of these monasteries have survived the centuries (and Napoleonic domination); just a few houses in the Gothic style along the main canal and the church and bell-tower of Santa Caterina now remain from the earlier period. The bell-tower, built in 1283-1291 and restored in 1925, is in the Romanesque-Gothic style and has details from various periods. The bell-tower has a bell dated 1318, one of the oldest bells in Europe.
The island today has sports facilities, gardens and fields with various crops.
