Scuola Grande dei Carmini

This building was designed by Baldassarre Longhena and in 1627 became the seat of the "Scuola Grande dei Carmini".
In the mid-1700s the interior was decorated by Giambattista Tiepolo, whose work so impressed the Carmelites that he was nominated an honorary member of the confraternity. The Scuola was famous in the 17th and 18th Centuries: there were no fewer than 75,000 members in 1675, virtually half the population of Venice at the time. Like all confraternity schools, it was suppressed by Napoleon. In 1840, Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria re-founded it.
