Catholic Albanian immigrants were mostly artisans, barbers, inn-keepers and bakers.
Those with a knowledge of Slavic languages also became State interpreters, an important job and function in the Venetian Republic given its inherent vocation to trade and commerce.
Most of them lived in the area of the parish of Santa Maria Formosa in the district of Castello, between Riva degli Schiavoni and Campo Santi Filippo e Giacomo, close to the areas where Greeks and Slavs lived.

In 1442 the city allowed them to form their own association, the Scuola di San Severo e San Gallo, which dealt mainly with handling community assets and mutual support for the sick and needy.
