Timely reporting on the progress of tides

The Tide Forecast and Warning Centre has been operating in Venice since 1979 it gives the local citizens all the relevant information about the tides and timely alarm warnings if exceptionally high tides are expected, using: telephone answering service connected to 120 automatic research lines, direct telephone contact with the staff in the operational centre, tidal graphs published daily in the two daily newspapers, four illuminated panels in the busiest parts of town with around the clock information about the existing tides and those in the next few hours, information points in 4 newspaper shops and in the entrances of 3 of the Council buildings, pedestrian walkways connecting Piazza Roma and the train station with the majority of offices, a digital acoustic system instead of the old sirens with a different kind of warning depending on the level of the tide, free of charge SMS to the residents of the historical centre and those who run a business on the mainland.
